After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, I pursued a career in laboratory sciences and soon obtained a diploma in cytogenetics. I worked at Surrey Place Centre in the prenatal laboratory for number of years. I then moved on to North York General Hospital’s prenatal department. While there, I had the opportunity to take on the role of Director, Investigations and Hearings at CMLTO (College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario)-a self-regulatory body. In that role, I educated members of the profession about the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA), conducted investigations and prepared reports for the Executive Committee. In addition, I attended the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board hearings when the member appealed the decision of the Discipline committee. With my team, I managed to close all the investigative/disciplinary files at the College before moving on to the cancer laboratory at University Health Network (UHN).
I have successfully completed ADR in Healthcare, and the following courses as a continual learner: Health Law certificate course, Prosecuting and Defending Regulated health professionals, Health Privacy Law, Small Claims Court Processes, Personal Injury and Consent and Capacity Law through Osgoode Hall Law School and the ADR certificate course through the University of Windsor. In addition, I’m a certified inspector/investigator through CLEAR (Council on Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation). In 2010, I joined the OSMT (Ontario Society of Medical Technologists) Board representing District 5 (Toronto) and in 2011 Co-chaired a very successful OSMT annual conference held in Niagara Falls, ON. Over time, I took on the role of Vice President of the same organization and recently ended my term as President overseeing the implementation and education of a governance model and bylaws.
